Job Description
NBCUniversal is seeking a dedicated NABET Maintenance Engineer to join our Production Engineering group at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, NY. This role will have a strong emphasis on EVS systems and workflows, along with other production-related support that is critical to NBC News, Sports, and Entertainment operations.
The ideal candidate will have experience supporting live production environments and a strong technical understanding of EVS platforms. This person should be comfortable with troubleshooting EVS issues across live production, newsroom, playout, storage, networking, and server-based environments while also supporting control room and studio workflows.
As a NABET Maintenance Engineer, you will help monitor, troubleshoot, and improve the core infrastructure supporting 24/7 operations for NBC News, Sports, and Entertainment. This includes support of broadcast production systems, IP and baseband signal flows, server-based applications, intercom, audio, graphics, EVS playout/replay workflows, and network-connected production devices.
The right candidate is curious, technical, organized, and comfortable troubleshooting complex issues that cross multiple systems, platforms, and workflows.
Roles and Responsibilities EVS Support
- Act as a primary support resource for EVS systems used in live production, replay, playout, ingest, clip management, transfer workflows, and newsroom production workflows.
- Support and troubleshoot EVS platforms and related applications, including XT-VIA servers, IPDirector, XSquare, XTAccess, MOS Gateway, LSM/RDP workflows etc.
- Support EVS workflows connected to newsroom systems, including MOS Gateway communication, iNews integration, rundown workflows, playlist updates, and fast- changing live production needs.
- Create and maintain EVS documentation, including workflow diagrams, support procedures, version information, known issues, system dependencies, escalation paths, and operational handoff notes.
- Work closely with EVS operators, production teams, newsroom teams, Engineering, Operations, and EVS vendor support during live productions, maintenance windows, projects, and escalations.
Maintenance Support
- Act as one of the on-call engineers, addressing technical support requests from studio/control room and production operations.
- Support and troubleshoot broadcast production systems across both baseband and SMPTE 2110 IP systems, including routing, control systems, playout, graphics, audio and intercom.
- Maintain broadcast technology systems to ensure reliability throughout the entire production environment.
- Analyze and troubleshoot audio/video signal flows in SDI and IP ST 2110 environments as they relate to the entire production environment.
- Assist with the maintenance and support of core production systems including EVS, Vizrt, Ross XPression, RTS intercom, Ross Robotics, Calrec/Lawo audio systems, Sony switchers and cameras, and other integrated broadcast platforms.
- Client-focused support — understand and prioritize on-air issues. Coordinate with Operations to ensure minimal show disruptions.
Project Support
- Collaborate with design engineering teams on new projects, production system upgrades, and technology refresh initiatives.
- Assist with testing, commissioning, validation, and operational readiness of new equipment, software releases, workflow changes, and vendor-supported systems.
- Support maintenance windows, firmware upgrades, software updates, system cutovers, and workflow changes through planning, testing, validation, documentation, and clear communication.
- Document issues and resolutions, track recurring problems.
- Stay informed about trends and emerging technologies in the broadcast industry.
- Be prepared to offer practical solutions that improve reliability, workflow efficiency, system visibility, and operational readiness.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of recent experience supporting live television production environments.
- 2+ years of experience supporting EVS systems, replay/playout workflows, newsroom workflows, or similar server-based broadcast production platforms.
- Strong working knowledge of EVS workflows, including ingest, replay, playout, clip management, transfer workflows, playlist behavior, channel control, and operator support.
- Experience troubleshooting EVS issues through log review, service checks, Windows troubleshooting, network validation, storage checks, database synchronization awareness, and vendor escalation.
- 2+ years of experience with SMPTE 2110 standards, preferably in an Evertz environment.
- Knowledge and experience with HDSDI, embedded and discrete audio, analog and digital formats, including AES, MADI, AES67, Ravenna, Dante, or similar technologies.
- Experience with video production systems and workflows for live and taped programming such as replay/playout systems, switchers, video routers, encoders/decoders, control systems, and studio equipment.
- Understanding of IP-based broadcast equipment such as routers, switchers, audio consoles, signal processors, playback systems, intercom systems, monitoring platforms, and control systems.
- Solid understanding of TCP/IP protocols with knowledge of computer networking, storage infrastructure, multicast, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, NTP/PTP concepts, and common IP troubleshooting tools.
- Must be willing to work rotational shifts, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays with little or no notice.
- Ability to support a 24/7 live production environment, which includes weekends, overnights, and holiday shift work.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced live production environment.
- This position is a NABET Local 11 represented job. Successful candidates will be required to join the NABET Local 11 union upon employment if not already a member
Desired Characteristics
- Experience supporting EVS systems in a large-scale broadcast facility, live event environment, sports production environment, newsroom production workflow, or 24/7 live production operation.
- Experience with EVS software upgrades, workflow design, system commissioning, operational support, preventative maintenance, and vendor escalation.
- Bachelor’s degree in film production, Broadcasting, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Knowledge and experience with Evertz products including control systems such as Magnum, EXE Routers, SDVN, VUE, VIP, and related platforms.
- Knowledge and experience with Sony production switchers and cameras.
- Knowledge and experience with audio systems, including Calrec, Lawo, Pro Tools, RTS/Bosch/Clear-Com intercoms, ENCO, Dante, AES67, MADI, or similar platforms.
- Knowledge and experience with VizRT, Ross XPression, Chyron, and AR/VR systems.
- Experience with Jira, Confluence, ServiceNow, or other project and ticketing systems.
- Technical enthusiasm and an eagerness to never stop learning.
