Byron Bay, Australia

Smart Energy is one of Australia’s fastest-growing clean-tech and home-electrification companies - helping Aussie households transition to smarter, cleaner, more sustainable energy solutions. As we continue to scale nationally, we’re searching for a commercially driven Finance Manager to elevate our financial capability and support our next stage of growth. 🌏📈 This is a high-impact role sitting at the centre of operations - driving clean data, strong cash flow, and scalable finance processes across the business.

Why You’ll Love This Role 💡
Real Ownership – Lead day-to-day finance operations, not just report on them
High-Growth Environment – Build systems and processes that actually scale
Lead & Develop a Team – Onshore + offshore coordination with real influence
Cross-Functional Exposure – Work closely with Sales, Installations & Leadership

The Opportunity As the Finance Manager -  you’ll play a pivotal role in leading the engine room of finance - ensuring accurate execution across financial processes, oversitecollections, rebate funding, and internal reporting, while continuously optimising systems to support a fast-scaling business.

As a key people leader, you’ll oversee core accounting, receivables, and rebate operations, while coordinating offshore workflows to drive efficiency and consistency across the function. Working closely with the CFO, Financial Controller, and FP&A Manager, you’ll play a central role in delivering clean data, strong controls, and reliable reporting that supports day-to-day operations and strategic decision-making 🧠💼

What You’ll Be Doing 📊

    Finance Operations Leadership

  • Manage day-to-day financial operations through the leadership of the Company Accountant and Assistant Management Accountant.

  • Oversee the preparation of monthly management accounts, including journals, reconciliations, and variance analysis.

  • Monitor the accuracy of balance sheet reconciliations and support continuous improvement of reporting processes.

  • Collections & Cash Flow Execution

  • Supervise AR and rebate collections through direct reports, ensuring alignment with cash flow targets and service standards.

  • Provide support on escalated debtor and rebate cases, and drive improvement in turnaround times and stakeholder communication.

  • Monitor and report on working capital metrics including debtor days, rebate cycle times, and collection success rates.

  •

    Team Management & Offshore Coordination

  • Lead a multi-role team with onshore and offshore components, fostering ownership, capability development, and performance culture.

  • Delegate low-complexity tasks (e.g. balance sheet reconciliations, invoicing) to offshore teams and ensure QA of outputs.

  • Champion documentation, standardisation, and accountability in all team processes.

  • Process Improvement & Systems Oversight

  • Support onboarding and change management for finance systems and tools.

  • Identify and implement efficiency opportunities across invoicing, reconciliation, rebate tracking, and internal reporting.

  • Business Partnering

  • Act as a point of contact for operational teams (sales, installations, customer support) on financial execution matters.

  • Collaborate with the FP&A Manager to supply management reports, variance explanations, and operational insight.

  • Work with the Financial Controller to support audit readiness, compliance checks, and internal control reviews

Qualifications and Experience

  • CA or CPA qualified.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • 5+ years in finance roles, with at least 2 years in a leadership or operations capacity.

  • Strong technical understanding of core accounting principles and financial operations.

  • Proficiency with Xero, Google Sheets, and CRMs such as Salesforce.

  • Experience managing finance staff and working with offshore teams.

  • Background in solar, construction, or energy sectors (Desirable)

  • Familiarity with rebate platforms such as Formbay (Desirable)

To be a front running candidate ⭐

  • Natural assertive team leader with strong mentoring and coordination skills.

  • Process-minded, analytical, and calm under pressure.

  • Able to balance detail focus with operational execution and delegation.

  • Clear communicator and cross-functional collaborator.

  • Proactive, commercially aware, and committed to continuous improvement.
