The role

The Senior Software Engineer will lead the development and maintenance of software across the full software development lifecycle. The role entails major contributions to and oversight of the specification, design,

implementation, integration, testing and deployment of software, ensuring compliance with engineering

processes, system requirements and software development plans. The Senior Software Engineer will mentor

junior engineers, provide technical guidance, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project

objectives, typically as a technical lead or subject matter expert in a particular domain. Engineers in this role

are expected to stay informed about emerging technologies and continuously improve their skills to lead by

example and drive team improvement.

Further, the successful candidate will:

  • Lead the gathering and analysis of software requirements from system specifications and stakeholders.
  • Lead the development and documentation of software architecture and design, ensuring alignment with requirements.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of clean code to meet requirements and design. Build, test and document software units.
  • Develop and manage software requirements specification documentation.
  • Lead the development and documentation of software test plans, procedures and automations to verify that software behaves in accordance with requirements and design.
  • Coordinate the integration of software components into a cohesive software system.
  • Lead the development of software integration test plans, procedures and automations to verify that integrated software meets operational requirements and performance criteria.

Flexible work arrangements such as hybrid work from home / office, 9 day fortnight will be considered for this role.

About you

Your skills and experience will include:

  • Tertiary qualifications (Bachelor's degree) in a relevant discipline (Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field etc.), and/or equivalent relevant experience (preferably within the defence industry).
  • Minimum of 6-10 years’ experience in the field of Software Engineering (i.e. Requirements Specification, Software Design, Implementation, Verification and Validation, Integration, Deployment and Support).
  • Experience in complex software systems is desirable.
  • Proven ability to mentor engineering teams. Competent with foundational project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities. Ability to clearly convey technical information in both written and verbal forms.

  • Ability to work under pressure when required but able to balance performance and wellbeing

  • Demonstrate self-awareness and commitment to personal development, leading by example.


As a defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants will be required to hold an Australian Defence Security Clearance to NV1 level or have the ability to gain one.  Information including past and present nationality and citizenship may be requested to check eligibility for access to materials controlled under various export control regimes, including ITAR.
