Job Summary
The Chief Mechanical Engineer will oversee the workshop operations for the maintenance and repair of trucks and heavy mining equipment. This leadership role requires a thorough understanding of mechanical engineering principles, extensive experience with heavy machinery, and strong managerial skills. The successful candidate will ensure that all mechanical systems are functioning optimally, leading a team of engineers and technicians to deliver high-quality service while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.

Management & Leadership:
The Chief Mechanical Engineer will oversee the workshop operations for the maintenance and repair of trucks and heavy mining equipment. This leadership role requires a thorough understanding of mechanical engineering principles, extensive experience with heavy machinery, and strong managerial skills. The successful candidate will ensure that all mechanical systems are functioning optimally, leading a team of engineers and technicians to deliver high-quality service while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Management & Leadership:
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of mechanical engineers and technicians.
 - Oversee daily operations of the workshop, ensuring efficient workflow and prioritization of tasks.
 - Develop and implement training programs to enhance team capabilities and productivity.
 
- Develop and maintain preventative maintenance schedules for trucks and heavy mining equipment.
 - Conduct root cause analysis on equipment failures and implement corrective actions.
 - Coordinate repairs and modifications, ensuring that all work is executed to industry standards.
 
- Evaluate and recommend improvements to existing mechanical systems and equipment design.
 - Collaborate with electrical and hydraulic engineers to ensure seamless integration of multi-disciplinary systems.
 - Stay updated with the latest technological advancements in mechanical engineering relevant to heavy machinery.
 
- Enforce compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
 - Conduct regular safety audits and implement corrective measures as needed.
 - Maintain accurate records of safety incidents and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
 
- Develop and manage the workshop budget, optimizing resource allocation and cost management.
 - Evaluate and procure necessary tools, machinery, and supplies.
 - Monitor inventory levels and initiate orders for parts and equipment as needed.
 
- Liaise with other departments (e.g., operations, procurement, and quality assurance) to ensure workshop alignment with company objectives.
 - Prepare regular reports on workshop performance, maintenance activities, and project statuses for upper management.
 - Participate in strategic planning for future workshop needs and improvements.
 
Requirements
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field or 10 years’ experience.
 - Microsoft Excel PowerPoint, Microsoft word, CAT SIS, CAT ET, VIMS, VIMS supervisor, Prosis, Kraaft,
 - Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a significant portion in the heavy machinery or mining equipment industry.
 - Proven experience in a managerial role.
 - Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, and pneumatics associated with trucks and mining equipment.
 - Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills.
 
- Proficiency in engineering software and tools, such as CAD software.
 - Strong analytical and critical-thinking abilities.
 - Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while managing multiple priorities.
 - Strong commitment to safety and quality standards.
 - Exceptional interpersonal skills to interact with team members effectively and stakeholders.
 - Working Conditions
 - This role may require occasional travel to job sites 50km away.
 - The position involves working in a workshop environment with exposure to mechanical systems and heavy machinery.
