Web Developer (Design) (Learning and Research Services) (at the rank of Research Assistant I/II) in the University Libraries (Ref.: 533555)
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Web Application Developer to join the University Libraries team, focusing on the redevelopment of the HKU Scholars Hub webpage.
The Role
We are revitalizing a long-standing Library website and related experiences. You will craft visual language, information architecture, and interaction design for web pages and dashboards, ensuring clear, coherent, and elegant user experiences.
Beyond the website, you may also contribute to micro-sites for teaching & events, research discovery interfaces and data dashboards, integrations with repository/identifier services (e.g. ORCID/DataCite/Crossref), and internal tools that improve staff and user journeys
Key Responsibilities:- Define visual direction (typography, color, layout) and maintain a cohesive design system (tokens, components, patterns) with Storybook/Design Tokens documentation.
- Design and build a modern frontend for the Library website using TypeScript with React/Next.js (or Vue/Nuxt) and modern CSS tooling (Tailwind CSS or CSS Modules).
- Ensure accessibility to WCAG 2.2 (contrast, focus states, semantics) and inclusive design; write concise UI microcopy and component guidelines.
- Plan and execute incremental migration from legacy templates using the strangler pattern.
- AI-assisted design workflow (where appropriate): use Figma AI for variations/cleanup, repo-aware assistants (e.g., Claude Code / Cursor) for design-to-code handoff via Figma Dev Mode/MCP integrations.
- Bachelor’s degree (or above) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline; or in Design fields (Visual Communication/Graphic Design, Interaction Design/User Experience Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Information Design/Data Visualization, or Digital Media), with experience of modern frontend development or UI/UX design for modern web applications.
- Proficiency with Figma (components, variants, Auto Layout, prototyping); familiarity with Storybook/Design Tokens.
- Strong grasp of web standards & accessibility (WCAG 2.2), SEO fundamentals, and responsive design.
- Familiar with TypeScript, React/Next.js or Vue/Nuxt, and modern CSS (Tailwind, CSS Modules, or utility-first approach).
- Good command of written and spoken English and Chinese; strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Those with less experience and/or lower qualifications may be considered for appointment as Research Assistant II.
Advantageous Experience (Optional)- Design system practice (tokens, Storybook, Figma component libraries); UX collaboration, accessibility testing.
- Legacy-to-modern migrations (jQuery/Bootstrap/PHP/ASP → React/Vue) and content migration (sitemaps, redirects, canonical URLs).
- Experience integrating frontends with REST/GraphQL backends; exposure to Git and CI/CD.
Candidates with relevant skills or a strong design portfolio, including fresh graduates, are encouraged to apply.
