Our Mission

At Vertical Aerospace, we are pioneering the way for electric aviation. The VX4, our eVTOL (electric, vertical take-off and landing), ‘zero emissions’ aircraft will set a new safety standard for how we will navigate the sky.

We won’t realise our mission following the same legacy processes and traditions our predecessors followed; instead, we want to redefine aerospace best practices.

We are growing quickly from a prototype business to a scaling SME, and the next few years will be critical to our success and delivering on our ambitious goals of having the VX4 in service by 2030.

What To Expect

As an Advanced Electric Propulsion Unit (EPU) Modelling Engineer, you will join the Power & BMS Squad, working within the Electric Propulsion Unit Systems Team. This team delivers the electric motors, power electronics, and thermal management systems that propel our aircraft.

You will develop and validate Matlab Simulink/Simscape models of the complete EPU, including performance, efficiency, thermal, and control aspects. Your work will be central to integrating the EPU with the aircraft’s broader powertrain and flight control systems.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure our models meet the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance, contributing directly to Vertical’s mission to transform the future of air travel.

What You’Ll Do

  • Lead the development and management of EPU system models, including tracking data maturity.
  • Liaise with test and verification engineers to define rig tests and validate models.
  • Ensure that models comply with Vertical Aerospace modelling standards, enabling seamless integration with the full aircraft model.
  • Support the generation and validation of requirements through modelling of EPU use cases.
  • Provide detailed electrical models of the EPU to inform the design of the aircraft’s high-voltage electrical system.
  • Work with EPU controls engineers to develop and tune speed control algorithms for optimal performance.
  • Engage with certification authorities and contribute to documentation related to EPU performance compliance.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance system modelling processes and methodologies.

What You’Ll Bring

  • A degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or a closely related field).
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in electric propulsion system modelling within aerospace or automotive industries.
  • Strong proficiency in Matlab, Simulink, and Simscape toolsets.
  • Excellent documentation and reporting skills, including model validation and test reports.
  • Clear and confident communication skills, able to collaborate across teams and with external partners.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Strong organisational and analytical skills, with attention to detail in a fast-paced setting.
  • Understanding of powertrain inverters, electric motor control, and associated principles.
  • Experience using HIL or test rigs for control system verification.
  • Knowledge of thermal management systems, including heat transfer and cooling design.
  • Familiarity with version control and configuration management tools.
  • Experience using requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS, JAMA).
  • Awareness of aerospace certification standards and processes such as ARP4761, ARP4754, and DO160.
