Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.
Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who’ll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.
In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Engineer Lead.

- Develop deep understanding of existing and new operations procedures and tooling to inform recommendations to senior leaders and drive safety related decisions
- Drive development of evaluation methodologies for operational processes, procedures, and tooling alongside operations & safety leads
- Triage and deep dive on field events when they occur to identify areas for improvement in design. Be the point person for retrospectives and implement improvements to test coverage and processes to prevent similar issues from happening in the future
- Partner with Operational Safety to ensure that the entire end to end system including humans in the loop (Waymo Personnel and First Responders) is effective and working as intended
You Have:
- A bachelor’s degree in a technical field
- At least 8 years of experience in systems engineering, safety engineering, or a related field
- Strong foundation in system engineering fundamentals such as requirements definition, formal verification and validation methods, and data driven decision making
- Experience managing diverse stakeholders and driving high level cross functional alignment
- Comfortable juggling multiple projects at once and working in ambiguity
- Ability to apply your existing technical knowledge to new areas & learn quickly
We Prefer:
- Experience with safety analysis such as STPA
